Comparison
CoCounsel vs ClientSafeAI: an alternative with a private model
Is there a CoCounsel alternative where the model runs privately?
The short answer
CoCounsel is Thomson Reuters’ legal AI, grounded in Westlaw and Practical Law as well as your own documents, and sold on 1-, 2- or 3-year plans. ClientSafeAI has no legal research content at all. It answers from your documents only, on a server dedicated to your firm, month to month.
- Pick CoCounsel if you need answers grounded in Westlaw content and Practical Law guidance, inside the Thomson Reuters ecosystem.
- Pick ClientSafeAI if what you need is to question your own files, such as contracts, discovery and deal documents, on hardware no one else uses, without a multi-year contract.
Side by side
| Compared on | CoCounsel | ClientSafeAI |
|---|---|---|
| What answers come from | Westlaw content, Practical Law guidance and your organization’s own documents. | Only the documents and recordings you upload. Every answer cites the source page. |
| Trains on your data? | No. Thomson Reuters says it never uses customer data to train the underlying models. | Never, on any plan. |
| Where the model runs | Thomson Reuters’ hosted service. Its pages don’t describe a per-customer dedicated server. | On a GPU server dedicated to your firm, in the US by default or in another country as a customization. The AI model, database and files all run on that one machine. |
| Price | Not listed publicly. An online form quotes new customers after you enter your sector, number of attorneys and jurisdiction. | $499/mo flat. Unlimited documents and questions, no per-seat pricing. |
| Minimum commitment | 1-, 2- or 3-year plans. Longer terms are discounted. | Month to month. Cancel any time. |
| Independent audits | SOC 2 and ISO 42001. | No third-party audit report (SOC 2 or ISO) yet. We don’t sign HIPAA BAAs. |
When CoCounsel is the better choice
- Your work depends on case law and secondary sources. CoCounsel has Westlaw and Practical Law; we have no legal research content.
- You need answers that cite legal authority. We only cite pages of your own documents.
- Your firm already runs on Westlaw and wants one vendor.
- If a client requires SOC 2 or ISO 42001 certification today, CoCounsel has them. We don’t yet.
What ClientSafeAI actually is
A Private AI Workspace is a GPU server ordered for one firm. Your documents, the AI model and the database all live on it, and answers cite the page they came from. Call and meeting recordings are transcribed on the same server. It costs $499 a month, flat, with no per-seat pricing. How the data is handled is set out on the security page.
